The Institute of Viticulture and Enology is established in 1902 as the State Experimental Station of Viticulture and Enology with decision of the Ministry of agriculture and trade. The region of Pleven was defined as suitable for the establishment of the station, on the recommendation of the famous European Professor Pierre Vial of the Agricultural Institute Paris. This State Experimental Station is the 1st scientific research institution in the field of viticulture and enology in the country and 5th in the world after Russia (1828), Italy (1872), France (1874) and Hungary (1898).
Future research plans
The Institute of Viticulture and Enology remains the National Institute working on issues of viticulture and enology in the country. Here were selected 36 varieties (21 wine, 15 dessert) and 5 branches; Developed technologies for the production of vine plants, grapes and wine, and technologies to combat diseases, pests and weeds in the vineyards, technology and circuitry for receiving pre-basic, basic and certified graft material; technological and organizational-economic modules grape production, process flow diagram for the production of clean production of grapes and wine have been developed. The IVE has established and maintenances the largest ampelographic collection on the Balkans with 1865 names of varieties. IVE is a member of the European Network for the storage of plant genetic resources.
